On February 6, 2001, Corporal Frances M. Collender, 39, became the second female State Trooper to die in the line of duty.
She was struck and killed by a vehicle as she attempted to assist a disabled motorist on Delaware Route 1 south of Odessa. Corporal Collender had stopped her patrol car behind a van that was disabled in the travel lane on Route 1. As she was standing next to her patrol car, her car was struck from behind by another vehicle. Corporal Collendar was pinned against the front of her car. She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries approximately two hours later. Cpl. Collender was assigned to Troop 9 and had served with DSP since enlisting January 16, 1997, graduating from the 66th Academy Class. |
